One tap
When you finish a lesson, tap “I made my first letter.” You join the count straight away.
One person, one count
Your second, tenth and hundredth letters won’t change the number. They just make you better at this.
Events count too
Guilds, stores, libraries and schools can add the beginners who sat at their tables.
Why start with a single letter?
A letter is small enough to finish.
Most creative projects ask for an evening. A letter takes a few minutes, and you end up holding something you made.
Slowing down is the point.
Making a letter by hand means looking closely at a shape and copying it with care. It’s a small, quiet break from screens.
It joins you to everyone who ever wrote.
Every writing tradition began with someone making marks by hand. Your first letter is part of that line.
How easy it is to take part
You don’t need expensive supplies.
You don’t need beautiful handwriting.
You don’t need to know anything about calligraphy.
You might use
a calligraphy pen.
Or a pencil.
Or a marker.
Or a crayon.
You just need to make your first letter.
Pick a letter
Browse tiny lessons from teachers around the world. Each takes 3 to 10 minutes.
Make it
Follow along with whatever is in your hand, then tap “I made my first letter.”
Pass it on
Take a photo, tag your teacher and invite someone else to try theirs.
Pick a letter. Any letter.

See the Alphabet ProjectGuilds around the world each draw a few letters. Beginners work alongside master calligraphers. Together the letters become an alphabet no single hand could make.
Nobody owns this. Everybody makes it.
One Million Calligraphers belongs to the people who take part in it. Here’s who we hope will help.
A nonprofit society may host and administer the project behind the scenes. The lessons, the letters and the count belong to everyone who makes them.

Guilds around the world draw a few letters each. Beginners sit beside masters. The finished alphabet belongs to all of them.
Sample lettering in this prototype is set in typefaces standing in for real hand-drawn contributions.
How an alphabet gets made
Guilds claim letters

Everyone draws
Members, teachers and first-timers make their letters in whatever style and tool they like.
We put it together
The letters are gathered into one alphabet and shared with the world.
